| Mystery is good at getting numbers and he gets lucky, but I'll bet he thinks Amendola is a part of the throat. |
Below is some fairly scattered data. I ordered the team by +/-, which isn't the most important thing. The final column is the most interesting. Presumably, a lower number indicates a team that has scored well, but also been scored against.
+/- PF rank (Most = 1) PA rank (Most = 1)
The Ghostface Spiller +111 1 8
The Grundles +89 2 9
Debbie Does Dallas Clark +40 3 7
Bush...Bowe -11 6 3
Maurice Jones-Jew -11 10 10
Do Your Balls Dangle Low? -16 7 5
Chris Henry's X-treme Parkour -29 4 2
Milk Steak and Jelly Beans -42 8 6
Gym, Tan, Smoosh -55 5 1
That's Gold, Jerry! Gold!!! -76 9 4

What does this say? One crazy thing about this league is that 6 teams are 2-3 and 3 teams are 3-2. This parody either means that the league is very even or incredibly effected by luck. Some things:
-Only three teams are + in the +/- column. This suggests to me that several teams have been unlucky.
-According to the Balance Index, Parkour, Bush...Bowe, and Smoosh are unlucky and could have more wins if not for some tough opponents.
-According to the Balance Index, MJ Jew and Milk Steak are lucky to be in a six way tie for 3rd and only 2 games out of first.
-The top three teams have scored a lot, but have not had many points scored against them. This might seem an obvious recipe for success, but as the top three point scorers are all in the top 3, I cannot say that luck has effected these teams too significantly.
-Once again, these numbers are rough and hard to analyze.
-MJ Jew is a total outlier and should feel blessed. Sorry, Chan, but this is undeniable - fewest points scored for and against, but two games out and tied for third. Watch out for this team if those numbers even out.
Here is another look at the Balance Index. I think it is very interesting and possibly suggests a more just ranking of the teams than many other systems.
Obviously these numbers are still quite superficial considering the small sample size and possible bad benchings. Nonetheless, they say something, but mostly only something about the past. One of the great things about fantasy football is that things change dramatically week to week and a team is only as good as its current week's lineup.
Clay Matthews told me to tell you all, "Snoochie Boochies."
Sorry the numbers look goofy. I'll fix it later.
ReplyDeleteI'm such a dork, I could play with these numbers all day. The better question, is does luck even out, try measuring that. My opponents in my two losses scored a total of 283 pts (unlucky, but I would have still lost with them scoring much less each time). On the other hand I also have a win with just 86 pts, of course against MJJ.
ReplyDeleteGood question. I don't see any reason to believe that the numbers even out. Of course, they might, but to say that they should is kind of a Gambler's Fallacy, right? Remember that one year - our first out of college, I believe - when I went like 8-0 with one of the worst teams around? I won scoring 60, 70, 80 points every week, only to end the year losing 8 of 9 games, or something like that. I suppose you could say luck evened out, or perhaps it just ran out. Either way, like with real football, one has to hope that if you hit a run of bad luck it doesn't kill your season.
